She Said Little Brother Hit Her

Aachi has seven sons and longs for a daughter. A wandering samiyar gives her eight peppercorns, and one of them becomes a little girl. When the girl tells one small lie about her brother, it grows into a sorrow that only the truth, and a magical rosebush, can heal. A gentle tale about honesty, saying sorry and forgiving, with five songs.

The songs

The vaalai fish song

Vaalai brother, vaalai brother, show me the way, vaalai brother. The lake is deep; show me the way across, brother. I'm taking rice to Chinna Annan's field, brother; on my way back I'll give you rice, a bellyful, brother.

Asking for flowers

In the whole wide world not one flower blooms, in town and country no good flowers are sold. For our sister's hair we need thaazhampoo; for the tying of the thaali we need jasmine and mullai. Roses to string her garland, give them with all your heart; sweet shenbagam flowers, give them, don't refuse.

The rosebush answers

"Chinna Annan hit me," she said, the liar! Would that liar's hair be brightened by my flowers? Would that wicked girl's hair be fit for my flowers? I will not give my flowers, never, ever will I give them.

The little sister's song

When Brother Vaalai struck me, I didn't tell it as soon as I came home; saying "Chinna Annan hit me," that was my fault, brother. You must forgive my wrong; I will do no wrong again. You must forgive my mistake; I will never lie again. Come as a god, brother, and see my wedding done.

The rosebush's blessing

Don't cry, my little sister, I, your brother, will give you flowers; the wrong you did without knowing, I forget it completely. For my fair girl's hair I'll give you shenbagam; for your wedding garland, flowers by the handful. Do no wrong, and may you live and flourish; tell no lies, and may you live and shine.
